November Bulletin Board

“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.”
                                                                    - Maya Angelou

This is the first month I got to do House of Ruth bulletin board! Basically I have to find out what going on in November for example events that House of Ruth did or awareness in November and make it presentable. For November House of Ruth didn't have major events like last month, so I decided to talk about Elizabeth Cady Stanton because November is her birthday month. She was a major contribution to the Seneca Falls Convention and took a huge part in the women rights movement. I also knew it was National non-profit awareness Month, so I did did a little collage on it by putting up some major domestic violence organizations like Peace over Violence, House of Ruth, and Laura's House. Other than that I put some campaign poster and a little section about some major events that happened last month. I got to say I did good for my first bulletin board but next month is going to be better!

Blog 9: EQ

Content

1. "I reviewed the rule of three or writing an EQ"

2.Review the following EQs

a. What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?

 - I believe this follows the rules of three because it's not a yes or no question, it allows some space for            an opinion and argument against the question, and the format is good. For example rule#2 Takes a                Stance: the author could argue that diet pills are bad and an audience member could counter argue.

  b. What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?

- I believe the format kind of threw me off ,my revision of the EQ would be : What are the most                        important factors to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation? Other than that the EQ fallows
    the other rules.

c.What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?

-I could see this EQ passing only rule 2, the format needs a little fixing and I feel like "what is most                   important ..." is a bit confusing , it doesn't sound right, it makes your EQ a bit confusing.

  d. How can an Anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?

 - This EQ passes the rule of three because its specific and direct and it allows people to argue, if they                 thing the author answer is wrong.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

"Our lives begin to end the day, when we become silent about things that matter"

                                                                -Susan B Anthony

This month has been the most busiest month probably ever in my experience at House of Ruth so far. Since it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, there were mutiple events going on in the community and I even got to be apart of some!

I-poly Teen Dating Violence Assembly!

This assembly is my most important accomplishment because I went far above my comfort zone by speaking to a large group of freshman. The whole assembly was about teen dating violence. I was really nervous but I quickly came over it, one reason is because I really enjoy talking about something I am passionate about. It took a lot of time figuring the perfect day to present that was acceptable to everyone schedule and also preparing myself mentally. At the end it was all worth the wild because the only thing that matter is getting the message out, but mostly maybe helping a victim.
Candle Light Vigil

As part of DV awareness month, House of Ruth hosted their annual Candlelight Virgil. To promote and educate the public about domestic violence. This year's theme was What Men an Do to Stop Domestic Violence". For the event I helped out by attaching cups to the candles and also putting the names of  the victims of DV that has been killed. During the event I helped greet people. This is an experience that inspired me to get involved more with the community and also realized that I got lucky to be involved with such an amazing organization.
Preparing

With all events, you have to prepare so they could run smoothly. during my mentor-ship hours at House of Ruth I got to create about 600 or more packets for my mentor events and my assembly for this month. Also to create purple ribbons and cut out purple ribbon stickers. Again for the Candlelight Virgil I got to help prepare the candles and do small jobs like fold/count brochures. Other than that I am really happy that I got to be apart of the events because not only I get to say "I helped" but Its good to know that you did something right.

Blog 8: Research and Working EQ

Content:
1. What is your working EQ
How can a victim of domestic violence best receive help and information they need to be able to recover?
2 What is the best possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format
EQ: How can a victim of domestic violence best receive help and information they need to be able to
           recover?
*Need to know that there are people and resources out there for victim, there not alone. Such
as House of Ruth or any organization near your area. Victim could go to counseling groups,
               hotline etc.....
           * How to tell if your relationship is abusive, different stages of Domestic Violence. different
              types of DV.
3. What is the most important source you have used that helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?
-A book called, "In Love and in Danger : A Teen Guide to Breaking Free of Abusive
Relationships" by Barrie Levy. It helped me the the fundamentals of Domestic violence. It
gave me a lot of reasons and stages of DV also what an you do to help. It also gave
information on where DV Victims can receive help. Also the first book I read about DV.
on where victims of DV could get help.
4, Who is your mentor, or where are you volunteering, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?
     - My mentor is Marina Wood from House of Ruth, mentoring there help me a lot when it come to better
understanding of domestic violence. It relates to my working EQ because I would talk to her about my
EQ, for example, why is counseling groups important to the victim and she would give me her best
answers. Also House of Ruth is a domestic violence office that provides help for domestic violence
violence victims, so that is very useful for answering my EQ.

Domestic Violence : Opposing Viewpoints

"The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinions and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character in mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this."
                                                                                                                            - John Stuart Mill

This month I finished a book called, "Domestic violence opposing viewpoints" by David M, Haugen. The reason I choose to read this book is because I personally wanted to see different viewpoints on different domestic violence topics because I like to be thorough when I decided which opinion or statements I believe in, and this book really helps. One example is, one section of this book there is a topic in which states, why domestic violence is a serious problem and an opposing section that states, why domestic violence is not a serious problem. It is written also with the help of prominent spokespeople.  I believe that everybody interesting in learning about domestic violence go and get this book because not only does it provide very useful information but it helps see the facts on both sides for people as thorough as me. I believe that, who do not know their opponent's viewpoints arguments cannot completely understand their own.

Blog 5 Project Reflection and Working EQ

The Pentagon

1. Positive Statement : What positive thing happen as a result of what you have completed so far?

A positive thing that resulted in what I have completed so far is, I accumulated more knowledge    about domestic victims and offenders. From House of Ruth and Pomona Community Crisis Center.I also meet new possible people that I can interview for the future. I also had enhance my communication skills.

2. EQ content: Pick a piece of research or your interview . How has it helped you improve your understanding of your topic?

The first week of research check, I got an encyclopedia article by Cheryl Hanna. The article has a TON of information about abusers and victims, it helped me choose who I wanted to base by senior project on (Victims) but I really want my senior project to be both ways if i could. Also it talks about federal approach to Domestic violence and prosecution / sentencing policy for victims and offenders which I found every helpful.

3. What has worked for you in the senior project?

So far getting mentor ships and people to interview has worked for me so far. Also finding research about domestic violence in general. And my schedule for which days I volunteer at has worked for me, no complications hasn't come up so far and hopefully never.

4. What hasn't worked so far?

So far what hasn't worked so far is choosing between domestic violence victims or offenders. I have really awesome mentor ship for both topics and I hope I could work with both. I really want to, if I chose one than the other I will still be volunteering at either one.

5. Finding Value:
What is a potential question you would like to study this year?
   - What is the best way for a person that is affiliated with Domestic violence receive help?
What do you plan to do for mentorship?
   - I plan on actually going to counseling groups and events that my mentor let me go to if I have the chance.      Also to get as much experience and knowledge as possible to help with my senior project.

First Day : House of Ruth

Today, I started doing my mentor-ship with Marina Wood from House of Ruth. When I arrived there the first thing that I got to do is photo copy a book that she let me barrow which is called," In Love and in Danger" which is a really good book and providing awesome pointers and info that I haven't known before. She made me do it for a binder that she is putting together for me

After that for the next 30 minutes I had to organize/put some pamphlets and little draw string backpacks away and into their place and I took 1 pamphlet home because they had some really good information that I could use in the future and for references. The bottom picture shows The table I worked at and a pamphlet I took home.

I got to make put together qoutes with candy, and it was really cool because Marina passes it to kids, teens, and adults that she presents to at events and it has really motivational quotes attached to it such as," Stand up don't stand by or break the cycle." I forgot to mention that part of Marina duty at House of Ruth is to go to different schools and events and talk to women, teens, or whoever about domestic violence and other categories like teen dating and healthy/unhealthy relationships and much more.
When I finished that it took  a great deal of my time but I enjoyed it, it was really relaxing to me for some reason. After that I had to check other volunteers files to see what other languages they spoke. Marina let me barrow a video called,"Broken Harmonies" and I have to write a little report and then I plan on giving it to Marina. Since I am not 18 yet I can't go and talk to the victims or see how House of Ruth handles the victims but I don't mind because Marina could tell me about it if she doesn't mind. That concludes my 1st day at House of Ruth and I can't wait to do it again!

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

Content:

1. I plan on interviewing either Marina from House of Ruth or Kele from Pomona Community Crisis
center because Marina  goes to different schools to talk about Domestic Violence.  Kele is the
complete opposite and he is a counselor at PCCC counseling offenders of Domestic Violence.

2. Since I am going to ask open ended questions, I am most likely going to ask additional questions
    such as:

    - How did you get to the position you are now?
    - Why did you decide to become a counselor for domestic violence offenders/victims?
    - Tell me about the pathway you chose to take in your career?
    - How is your experience with PCCC/HoR so far?

Topic Choice and Semester 1 ESLR Goals

1. Domestic Violence
2. I-Poly Citizen
This year I made a promise to myself that I would show up to school on time because the past 3
years I had a great deal of tardy slips from the office. As a I-poly citizen and to show grown in            ESLRS I plan on being more mature, and also to be more like a role model for lower grade
level because I seen past seniors that haven't exactly "grown up" to the level I thought they
should be on. An example would be participating in can food drives or red cross blood
donation.I really want to participate in one of the senior year committees but between
having to do 4 days a week for mentor ship, I will try and make room in my schedule.

Effective Learner
I promised myself to finish high school in a positive and high note. Beyond doubt I believe that I
am capable of doing just that. Before senior year had begun, I promised myself that I would use
time effectively in class and not procrastinate on any senior project. One problem that I use to
have is not asking for help when needed, but this year is going to be different I could feel it. I
plan on using my agenda this year, whats funny is each year I always get one but never use it but
to be a effective learner I must.

Effective User of Technology
I must say I consider myself pretty good with technology, I know the basics such as power points,
emails, searching the web, etc. I am a pretty good problem solver when it comes to using
technology, know a days everything in on the internet and its not that hard to figure it out. To be
a effective user of technology I must go beyond that and learn skills that I haven't already such as
I don't know what is a multimedia file or how to create a short film adaptations  but I know i will in
time know how to use them. In 10th grade I know how to made short film adaptation in film
elective but that on a Mac and I have a HP computer but I will seek assistant when I have any
problems with technology. I will also update my cellphone with apps just incase I need to access
Google docs or use a reminder app.

Effective Communicator
Throughout 3 years in I-poly, I must say that I have become a effective communicator but I still
have some problems. One of my biggest problem is going up to present and getting really nervous
and stuttering through my presentation or sometimes forgetting my lines, I think its just because I
hate being the center of attention but to be a effective communicator I must overcome my
problems especially since I'm a senior and most of the project are by myself. My
mentor ship is helping me become a effective communicator because I am constantly
helping or communicating with domestic violence offenders and victims. To become a effective
communicator I have to get my point out to my future group member without becoming
disrespectful because in past group I was afraid that they wouldn't like my idea but this year
is different. Basically I have to suck it up because from senior 2 hours presentation to presentation
to my classmate I have to learn to become a effective communicator. I am  pretty positive I will.

Summer Mentorship Component

Literal:

1.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiWTu1LpnRdodEJJa2cxVkFYMDgya2JfZWpwa3MxalE&usp=sharing

2.   Pomona Community Crisis Center
     Either Sandra or Kele. (909)623-1588

3.  - What is the best way to get through a troubled individual?
     - How to you handle a situation that gotten of hand?
     - How do you console/help a individual that lives a troubled life?

Interpretive
4. The most important thing that I gained from this experience is communication. Communication is the best possible way to get through a individual with a deep and troubled past. The counselor in Pomona Community Crisis Center are a great example because there are constantly people that are setting appointments to meet up with the counselor and when the meeting are over the seem more relax in my observation. Also from helping clients I could say that my communication skills are improving.

Applied
5. This summer was very stressful to me because I kept on switching topic mostly due to no one accepting me or because of my age. First of all I wanted to do something with non- profit organization but I could find a place that fitted my needs or the direction that I wanted to be, and the only place I found is Salvation Army and I don't think I could turn that into a topic that I am passionate about. From there I went on to Dentistry and health care clinic but my age restricted me to those topics and to be honest I doubted they wanted to mentor me because they were busy and they barely know me. After weeks of switching topics and no phone calls I decided that I have to find a topic fast because school was approaching quickly so I searched up domestic violence clinics in Pomona and found Pomona Community Crisis Center and House of Ruth. I'm a feminism and domestic violence victims are mostly females and for that reason and whats available in Pomona, and that's how I chose my topic. Also I went in my mentor-ship knowing my topic.

2013 2 Hour Presentation Reflection

1.The senior presentation that I saw during the 2 weeks were

 Day 1: Ana B. Hairdressing
 Day 2: Rene L. Karate/ Andrew D. Personal Training
Day 3: Elijah A. Marine Biology/ Gabriel B. Stage Managing
Day 4: Perla V. Early Childhood Edu.
Day 5: Victoria Y. Foster Care/ Elizabeth R. Physical Therapy
Day 6: Brent K. Computer Analysis
 Day 7: Austin B. Photography/ Logan R. Special Olympics
Day 8: Hannah S. Theoretical Physics/ Angel C. Homeless Youth
Day 9: Stephany H. Graphic Design

2. I don't any questions about the senior project because they all have been answered or I can't think of any right now. Before the senior presentation began I wondered how do they organize their presentation, do they just talk about their topic in general but during the senior project I found out that all the senior presentation is based on their EQ and then they have to follow a sort of like a template to organize their senior project. I don't have any question because I don't know the other senior project other than senior presentations.

3. The most important part of the senior project based on my opinion, was being able to talk for 30 min and make time. Some students were successful and some were not and I could tell just by some of the seniors repeating thing that they already said or pausing throughout their presentation.

4. I am considering Disaster Relief, Tennis,World Poverty, or some kind of human rights. I leaning towards world poverty because it's a topic that is dear to my heart and something I want to get involved and volunteer with in the future. I am Cambodian and it is a 3rd world country and it hurts to know that the people and children there are living a life that cannot be described.I have my doubts about doing world poverty because it is really hard to find a mentor in my area.
