Blog 21, Mentorship

Literal
Marina Wood ( Event Coordinator), House of Ruth

Interpretive
The most important thing that I gained from my experience volunteering at House of Ruth with Marina Wood was becoming more involved with my community. I did some public speaking at community events including my presentation to the freshman about domestic violence. Also mentoring with House of Ruth made me realize i had a passion for helping others, it gave me a sense of self gratification that i am doing something other then focusing completely on myself. From their i started to become more involved with other non-profit organizations around my community, example Project Sister Family Services.

Applied
Well I worked hand in hand with House of Ruth. For my best answer, working with educators to create a curriculum for 7-12 grade students, I got to present a different events and I-poly and see the students reaction when i told them this information and it made me realize that a lot of students didn't know half the things me and my mentor were talking about or they were curious to know more. Another thing that i have done that my helped me derived my answer to my EQ is seeing what House of Ruth does to help the victims. Since House of Ruth protects the victim identity and profile, my mentor told me what they do to help the victims in general to escape an abusive relationship. such as create a safety plan when during the legal process.

Exit Interview

Content
1. What is your essential question and why? What is your best answer and why?

My essential question is, " What is the best way a domestic violence organization can help a person
escape an abusive relationship." Well it was a long process to finding a EQ that I could work with.
I wanted my essential question to include all victims meaning men and women and about
helping the victims and the public community in general. The problem with that is it was too broad and
I needed to narrow it down. So I focused on helping victims escaping a abusive relationship. My best
answer is, work with educators to teach  7-12 grade curriculum  designed to educate students about
domestic violence. Why? Because teaching teens early can prevent them from being in an abusive
relationship in the future. With knowledge comes power.

2.  What process did you take to arrive at this answer?

Well i knew i wanted to work with educating people in general about domestic violence until i did my
presentation for freshman about domestic violence. A lot of students only knew the basics of DV, for
example some students didn't know how to define a healthy relationship or some people didn't know
what there are more situations that fall into domestic violence. Then my mentor Marina Wood told me
that educating people is the best thing a domestic violence organization can do for everybody because
Just getting to word out in public may help a victim come forward or prevent an abusive situation. Also
going and attending some events with her made me realized that teaching teens about DV before it could       happen is every essential. I wanted to work with teens because their are at the most risk for dating
violence and at risk or domestic violence in their future.

3. What problem did you face? How did you resolve them?

Finding time to mentor is one of my major problem because i had to find a day where i could fit my father     and mine schedule so it could work. I ended up only volunteering on Thursday because it when my father
has a day off and its the only day I could volunteer on. Another problem is finding the right topic for my
senior topic because all summer i was stressing out, nobody was take me in to do mentor ship with them.
I wanted to go into the medical field but unfortunately nobody wanted to accept me as their volunteer. I
I went through physical therapy, dentistry and medical assistance. Then i wanted to do something with
homelessness but the only place that would accept me was in Ontario and Los Angeles, transportation
was my only problem with that. So i was at a standstill but i figure out from my past failures that i wanted
help people. Purther suggested domestic violence and then it just sort of clicked for me because i
consider myself a feminist, i knew people dealing with this situation and there is an organization in my city.      From there everything fell into place.

4.What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?

Coming into my topic I only knew the basics and the general idea of domestic violence. It was until the
first day at House of Ruth that Marina Wood ( current mentor) gave me this book called, " A Teens
Guide to Breaking Free of an abusive relationship" by Barrie Levy. It was honestly the best book about
my topic because it put it in a perspective where everyone could understand it and also after reading this
book i felt uneducated about domestic violence because there were so many thing that i didn't know
before. It also started to give me idea o what i want for foe EQ and it helped me come u with my best
answer. Another great source was, " Domestic Violence Survival Guide" by Clif Mariani. It gave some
insight for how domestic violence victim should react in and out of an abusive situation. It helped me
come up with my 1st answer which was assisting victim with safe escape during the legal process.

Blog 19: Independent Component 2

Content

Literal
(a.) " I, Marilyn Sambo, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work

(b) Marina Wood, House of Ruth event coordinator, bachelor's degree in women studies, masters in cultural studies and 5 yeahs experience with non profit organizations

"It's My Life Now: Starting Over After an Abusive Relationship Or Domestic Violence" by Meg Kennedy Dugan, and Roger R. Hock

"Is It My Fault?: Hope and Healing or Those Suffering Domestic Violence" by Justin S. Holcomb and Lindsey A. Holcomb

(c) Digital spreadsheet

(d) For my independent component 2 and wanted to complete more hours at House of Ruth with my mentor Marina Wood. I did the everything basic work that I usually do when I volunteer there like make copies of packets about domestic violence,  healthy relationships, make and fold flyer, etc... I didn't do any major projects at House of Ruth because in the beginning of each year she Marina is always busy with training new volunteers and going to different events all over Inland valley, Los Angeles and San Berdarino. But i did receive an award for my time volunteering there. I also worked with Project Sister Services which does along with my topic because that organization focuses on victims of all gender and ages who had been sexually assaulted or abused. Which falls in line with Domestic violence its just that House of Ruth has been working with sexual, emotionally, verbally and  abused victims. I was part of their Denim Day committee  2014 where me and a group of teen work together to help plan an event on 4/24/2014. Where any person can go can receive information on different organization and also have fun with the different activities we can up with.

Applied
This component help me come up with my best answer which was create a curriculum for students in 7-12 grades. Working with different teens and also talking to some made me realize that a lot of them don't really know about domestic violence and how can you tell if they are in a abusive situation. Also working with my mentors in general helped me come up with my answers and make them better. For example my first answer was help victim with safe escape during the legal process and my mentor gave me a a lot of techniques that they used on the victims at house of Ruth to help them have a safe escape. Also Marina gave me a safety plan template than they help the victim  create. My experience at Project sister help me with answering my EQ by helping me realize that getting the word out in the community is the best way for victims to step forward and receive the help they need for safe escape. The whole denim day event is too inform the community that their is help out their for victims of domestic violence.

Blog 18 : Third Answer

Content:

Just like you did for answer 1 and 2 post your :

EQ :  What is the best way a domestic violence organization can help a person escape an abusive
          relationship ?

Answer 3: A Domestic violence organization, can hep a person escape an abusive relationship by counseling                   the victim in various forms of therapy.

1. Therapy allows survivor to identify their role in the trauma and let go self blame
2.  The 3 key counseling qualities is understanding, acceptance, and empowerment.
3.  Good listening skills when counseling a victim of DV is showing empathy, remaining patient and calm,
being sincere, asking open ended questions, being okay with silence , and etc.

Research Source
Epstein, Liana. Domestic Violence Counseling Training Manual. Rep. Cornerstone Foundation, 23 June 2003. Web. 26 Mar. 2014.

Conclusion,
There are multiple ways a domestic violence organization can do to help a person escape an abusive relationship but one of the main reasons a victim goes and seek help at DV organizations is to have someone to talk to, for someone just to listen to their story, to be that motivator, and not judge them at all. DV organizations provide counseling/ therapy for the victims and that's one way they could help a person escape an abusive situation.

Advisory Meeting #2

Content:

Just like you did for answer 1 and the objectives for Purther's textbook work for answer 2 post:

EQ

Another way or a Domestic violence can best help a victim escape an abusive relationship is to make the community be more aware therefore teaching a curriculum for students in middle and high school, designed to teach them how to escape an abusive relationship.
  1. Roughly 1.5 million high school boys and girls in the U.S. admit to being intentionally hit or physically harmed in the last year by someone they are romantically involved with.
  2. One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.
  3. Only 33% of teens who were in a violent relationship ever told anyone about the abuse.
Research Source
- loveisrespect.org, " Dating Abuse Statistics"
- People.org, " A High School's Nightmare Dating Violence"
- More4kids.info, " Helping your Teen Escape Abusive or Destructive Relationship"
- thedailybeast.com, " Teaching Teens to Have Healthy Breakups"

Teens are the most vulnerable to domestic violence, in their case dating violence. Teaching a curriculum for teens in middle and high school is the best why for them to be more aware and how to  respond if they are in a situation where they are trying to break free/escape.

*Write your answer like you would write a thesis statement.  Please don't give us one or two words or start your sentence with by.    Thanks!

On Friday 2/28 for Advisory #2, you will be presenting what you have from this blog.  The presentation is more like a share-out and should not last longer than 2 minutes. You don't need a visual.

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

-I am planning to do more mentor ship work with Marina Wood because it really helped me understand           my EQ way better and also I love what I am doing now. Maybe to take to the next level, I could go
help my mentor at her actual events instead of helping her prepare for it.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
      - I will continue to log in my Hours in my spreadsheet i provided on the right hand side and                              take pictures for evidence. I will be at House of Ruth every Thursdays or whatever days I am free.

3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
      - I will be at House of Ruth more often and not just that I will be trying my best to attend                                  events and ask my mentor Marina Wood to give me any books or classes I could attend. My Mentor
is already a awesome teacher and I am sure if I have question/ concerns she will do her best to answer
them.
4.  Post a log on the right hand side of your blog near your other logs and call it the independent component 2 log.

Independent Component 1

( Just some of the work I did for my 30 hours work which included, sorting beanie babies which were donated to house of Ruth, and these past couple of months my mentor was busy therefore she usually leaves work for me to do.). The work she leaves me to do is usually makes a lot of copies and manuals for new volunteers. It helps me understand my topic even more because a lot of the things she makes me do is about DV and I would always read new things that i didn't know before or I could have more ideas of what i could do for my future presentations. I would also talk to Marina about my ideas so I would know if i am in the right direction so i don't have any inaccurate data/info.
  • LITERAL
    (a) Statement saying: “I, student name, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
  • I , Marilyn Sambo, afirm that i completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work .
  • (b) Cite your source regarding who or what article or book helped you complete the independent component
  • Domestic violence opposing viewpoints by David M. Haugens
  • (c) Provide a digital spreadsheet (aka log of the 30 hours).   Post it next to your mentorship log.
  • (d) Explanation of what you completed.
  • INTERPRETIVE
Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.
  • Mostly for my mentor ship for my 30 hours of work I did basic office work such as copy alot of packets, stick paper to candy, help her with manuals, and etc. Also Other than that I help her get prepared for her events such as helping her fill her bags with things she needs in order to go to the events

  • APPLIED
How did the component help you understand the foundation of your topic better?  Please include specific examples to illustrate how it helped.
  • Without component 1, I would not have a deeper understanding of my topic and my foundation. I went into my topic with knowing only the bare basic of domestic violence. When starting off with independent component 1 my mentor started to give me books and videos to watch then after i was done she would make my write a report or we will talk about what happened and how it all ties into domestic violence. this helped me understand ,my topic better because not only did i want to learn more but it taught me a lot of data and statistics that i haven't known before. Also Marina was very helpful because she answered any questions I had and helped me with any concern or questions i had to the best of her abilities. The events that i attended also helped ,me understand my foundation even better all of the events had information and victims stories was inspirational and informative. Lastly all the office work and little things that I did at house of Ruth was very informative and in the end helped me understand my foundation. For example, Marina is always telling me to print out packets for her, and i would sit in the copy room and take read the packets some of the packets were about teen dating violence, domestic violence 101 and etc.... In the end i would tell Marina if i could keep them to help me with my foundation.

Senior Project, The Holidays

Content:

1. It is important to consistently work on your senior project, whether it is break or we are in school.  What did you over the break with your senior project?

It is very important to work on your senior project consistently whether we are in break or not because the more you get done and do the more easier it will be on you in the long run. For example updating your hours and WB. I mostly  volunteered at House of Ruth and fixing my notebook for research check.

2.What was the most important thing you learned from what you did and why?  What was the source of what you learned?

The most important thing I learned from volunteering is you have to be consistent with your work and put 100% effort in everything you do because it your senior topic but most importantly if you put that much effort, it will pay off and you would be better off in your senior project.

3. IF you were going to do a 10 question interview on questions related to your EQ, who would you talk to and why?

I would talk to my mentor Marina Wood because she is an expert on domestic violence since she goes and actually teach other students in colleges or events about domestic violence if not another staff member at house of Ruth because they are all equally resourceful and knowledgeable when it comes to domestic violence victims.

November Bulletin Board

“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.”
                                                                    - Maya Angelou

This is the first month I got to do House of Ruth bulletin board! Basically I have to find out what going on in November for example events that House of Ruth did or awareness in November and make it presentable. For November House of Ruth didn't have major events like last month, so I decided to talk about Elizabeth Cady Stanton because November is her birthday month. She was a major contribution to the Seneca Falls Convention and took a huge part in the women rights movement. I also knew it was National non-profit awareness Month, so I did did a little collage on it by putting up some major domestic violence organizations like Peace over Violence, House of Ruth, and Laura's House. Other than that I put some campaign poster and a little section about some major events that happened last month. I got to say I did good for my first bulletin board but next month is going to be better!

Blog 9: EQ

Content

1. "I reviewed the rule of three or writing an EQ"

2.Review the following EQs

a. What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?

 - I believe this follows the rules of three because it's not a yes or no question, it allows some space for            an opinion and argument against the question, and the format is good. For example rule#2 Takes a                Stance: the author could argue that diet pills are bad and an audience member could counter argue.

  b. What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?

- I believe the format kind of threw me off ,my revision of the EQ would be : What are the most                        important factors to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation? Other than that the EQ fallows
    the other rules.

c.What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?

-I could see this EQ passing only rule 2, the format needs a little fixing and I feel like "what is most                   important ..." is a bit confusing , it doesn't sound right, it makes your EQ a bit confusing.

  d. How can an Anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?

 - This EQ passes the rule of three because its specific and direct and it allows people to argue, if they                 thing the author answer is wrong.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

"Our lives begin to end the day, when we become silent about things that matter"

                                                                -Susan B Anthony

This month has been the most busiest month probably ever in my experience at House of Ruth so far. Since it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, there were mutiple events going on in the community and I even got to be apart of some!

I-poly Teen Dating Violence Assembly!

This assembly is my most important accomplishment because I went far above my comfort zone by speaking to a large group of freshman. The whole assembly was about teen dating violence. I was really nervous but I quickly came over it, one reason is because I really enjoy talking about something I am passionate about. It took a lot of time figuring the perfect day to present that was acceptable to everyone schedule and also preparing myself mentally. At the end it was all worth the wild because the only thing that matter is getting the message out, but mostly maybe helping a victim.
Candle Light Vigil

As part of DV awareness month, House of Ruth hosted their annual Candlelight Virgil. To promote and educate the public about domestic violence. This year's theme was What Men an Do to Stop Domestic Violence". For the event I helped out by attaching cups to the candles and also putting the names of  the victims of DV that has been killed. During the event I helped greet people. This is an experience that inspired me to get involved more with the community and also realized that I got lucky to be involved with such an amazing organization.
Preparing

With all events, you have to prepare so they could run smoothly. during my mentor-ship hours at House of Ruth I got to create about 600 or more packets for my mentor events and my assembly for this month. Also to create purple ribbons and cut out purple ribbon stickers. Again for the Candlelight Virgil I got to help prepare the candles and do small jobs like fold/count brochures. Other than that I am really happy that I got to be apart of the events because not only I get to say "I helped" but Its good to know that you did something right.

Blog 8: Research and Working EQ

1. What is your working EQ
How can a victim of domestic violence best receive help and information they need to be able to recover?
2 What is the best possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format
EQ: How can a victim of domestic violence best receive help and information they need to be able to
           recover?
*Need to know that there are people and resources out there for victim, there not alone. Such
as House of Ruth or any organization near your area. Victim could go to counseling groups,
               hotline etc.....
           * How to tell if your relationship is abusive, different stages of Domestic Violence. different
              types of DV.
3. What is the most important source you have used that helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?
-A book called, "In Love and in Danger : A Teen Guide to Breaking Free of Abusive
Relationships" by Barrie Levy. It helped me the the fundamentals of Domestic violence. It
gave me a lot of reasons and stages of DV also what an you do to help. It also gave
information on where DV Victims can receive help. Also the first book I read about DV.
on where victims of DV could get help.
4, Who is your mentor, or where are you volunteering, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?
     - My mentor is Marina Wood from House of Ruth, mentoring there help me a lot when it come to better
understanding of domestic violence. It relates to my working EQ because I would talk to her about my
EQ, for example, why is counseling groups important to the victim and she would give me her best
answers. Also House of Ruth is a domestic violence office that provides help for domestic violence
violence victims, so that is very useful for answering my EQ.

Domestic Violence : Opposing Viewpoints

"The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinions and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character in mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this."
                                                                                                                            - John Stuart Mill

This month I finished a book called, "Domestic violence opposing viewpoints" by David M, Haugen. The reason I choose to read this book is because I personally wanted to see different viewpoints on different domestic violence topics because I like to be thorough when I decided which opinion or statements I believe in, and this book really helps. One example is, one section of this book there is a topic in which states, why domestic violence is a serious problem and an opposing section that states, why domestic violence is not a serious problem. It is written also with the help of prominent spokespeople.  I believe that everybody interesting in learning about domestic violence go and get this book because not only does it provide very useful information but it helps see the facts on both sides for people as thorough as me. I believe that, who do not know their opponent's viewpoints arguments cannot completely understand their own.
